Garage Door Insulation

Any Easy Place To Install Insulation And Save Money

Properly weather proofing and insulating your home can save you hundreds of dollars, if not more, in energy costs every year.  From attics to walls to water heaters and more -- insulation can make all the difference in the world.  One often forgotten, but crucial item when it comes to insulation, is the garage door.

Adequate garage door insulation will, without question, help you reduce your energy bill.  Given that most garages are attached to the home, the temperature within them can effect the household temperature.  Preventing your garage from becoming an oven in the summer or an ice box in the winter is an easy enough task that is well within the capabilities of any DIY minded homeowner.

For the garage without insulation, the installation of foam panels right onto the interior surface of the door can do the trick.  These panels can be easily cut to size to each section of the door to accommodate for its bending and folding movement as it is raises and lowers.  The panels are light, simple to handle, and only require easy to use adhesive or fasteners.  It shouldn’t take more than an hour or two to complete the job.

There are plenty of garage door insulation kits, complete with instructions, that you can pick up at any hardware store or home improvement center.  Ownens Corning and 3M, among other manufacturers, make ready-to-go kits for any type garage door that cost well less than $100 -- an incredibly small price to pay to keep your garage cool in the summer and pleasant in the winter.

The instructions for proper installation are quite simple and do not vary much between garage door styles.  Take some quick measurements of the panel widths of the door.  Use an Exacto knife or other straight edge blade to cut and shorten the panels if necessary.  Usually one side of the insulation panel, whether it is foam or foil bubble insulation, has some slots or markings.   Place these markings toward the garage door and not facing outward.  Finish off the job by using adhesive tape or screws and fasteners to secure the panels in to place.

By taking the time and adding a properly insulated garage door to your overall insulation mix, you will be pleasantly surprised at not only how much money you save on energy, but how much more comfortable your garage and home will be.  Protect your garage, your home, your family and your energy bill -- do it with garage door insulation.
